"Joaquin Phoenix stars in this powerful, brutal thriller about a man hired to find a missing child. When the daughter of a powerful politician goes missing, Joe (Phoenix), an ex-soldier now specialising in saving children from sex rings, is sent in to retrieve her. Joe is an intriguing mess of a human being lives with his elderly mother and has a brutal way of managing his traumatic past. Ramsay’s thriller, which screened at Cannes and the BFI London Film Festival to great acclaim, is both brutal and gut-wrenching, as we follow her rage-fuelled protagonist on a journey into the dark underbelly of New York, a journey intensified by Jonny Greenwod’s superb, pulsating score." -- BFI
